Manikarnika Ghat
The eternal burning ghat

Manikarnika is the most sacred cremation ground in Hinduism. Cremations here have run continuously for over 3,500 years — it is said that the funeral pyres have never been extinguished. Hindus believe that dying in Kashi and being cremated here grants moksha (liberation from the cycle of rebirth). Around 80–100 bodies are cremated here daily. Viewing from the ghats is permitted though photography is strictly prohibited.
